Day 5 (Thursday - 6/02)

Despite another poor night sleeping we got up for our 8:30am included breakfast.  It was a yummy start to the day with a cold cut and cheese sandwich, orange juice, and yummy tea.

Once again we headed out walking and went to the Covid test facility.  The tester encouraged us to return later during the break in the performance. I didn't want to argue that for us the test's clock time didn't matter.  It just had to be the day before.

Back in town, we found a nice Balkan restaurant where I had bratwurst and sauerkraut while Angela had a salad.  Both were yummy.  Then it was time for more walking, people watching and time for Angela to enjoy some ice cream.

The play started at 2, so we went through the mandatory pat down an hour early when there was no line and found a nice table and chairs to relax at until we could enter the venue. The hour went by and soon our tickets were scanned and we found our seats which were in the first row just to the left of center. Score!!

A horn blew at 2pm signifying the start of the play.  The Passion play, by the way, has been performed every 10 years since the 1600's except during times of war and times of political correctness!  It recaps the ministry and message of Jesus with appropriate scenes from the Old Testament. There are hundreds of actors and in addition there is a large choir that shuffles on and off stage throughout the performance. All must be residents of Oberammergau.  The play is 5 hours long split into two halves.

The first half was really, really good setting up the tension between Jesus and the religious leaders as well as with Judas.

At the first break at 5pm, we walked to the Covid test site, got tested, waited 15 minutes, and left with printed negative test results. We then walked to the Wolf Hotel for our second included dinner.  This one was fabulous with an Arugula, tomato, & cheese salad followed by a cabbage salad, and an excellent pork steak and dumplings.  A Bavarian crème desert completed the meal. Our table mates were a couple from England who also had front row seats near us.

We returned early to the venue, got searched again and found seats near our entry door. Promptly at 7:30pm, the doors opened and we made our way to our seats. At 8pm, the horn blew, and the play resumed. It got dark and a bit chilly.  It was harder to follow along in the guide book, so eventually I gave up and just followed the action. And at 10:30pm promptly, it was over and we started filing out into the brisk night air.

Back at the gasthaus, we packed at hit the sack.  Our 6:30 alarm will come early!
